Filter Cloth Advanced Selection: Air Permeability, Cake Release, and Chemical Compatibility for Polypropylene, Polyester, Nylon, and Nomex Media in Industrial Filtration

Home » News » Filter Cloth Advanced Selection: Air Permeability, Cake Release, and Chemical Compatibility for Polypropylene, Polyester, Nylon, and Nomex Media in Industrial Filtration

Filter cloth selection determines filtration cycle time, cake moisture, cloth blinding rate, and service life. Four primary synthetic media—polypropylene (PP), polyester (PET), nylon (PA), and meta-aramid (Nomex)—serve distinct operating envelopes based on temperature, pH, and abrasion resistance.

Media Material Properties

Polypropylene cloth dominates general industrial filtration up to 90°C with excellent acid resistance (pH 2-14) but poor oxidation resistance above 70°C. Polyester provides superior abrasion resistance at 10x lower cost than Nomex and operates to 150°C continuous. Nylon offers excellent alkaline resistance but hydrolyzes in hot acid. Nomex withstands 200°C continuous in hot gas filtration.

Air Permeability and Weave Selection

Air permeability (L/dm²/min at 200 Pa) determines filtration rate: open weaves at 200-500 suit fast-filtering crystalline slurries; tight twills at 10-50 suit fine amorphous particles. Cake release is controlled by fiber surface energy and weave pattern—calendered finishes reduce adhesion for sticky cakes.

Equipment

Filter Cloth provides custom media selection. The PP Membrane Press pairs with PP cloth. The High Pressure Press requires durable media. The Automatic Press needs consistent cake release. The Oil Filter Press uses cellulose media.
