Insulation monitoring is the continuous surveillance technique that makes ungrounded (IT) and high-resistance grounded power systems practical and safe. By continuously measuring the insulation resistance between live conductors and earth, insulation monitoring devices (IMDs) detect the first insulation fault before it can develop into a hazardous second fault. Qingdao Britop’s YCIT-J Medical IT Insulation Monitor and related products implement this essential protective function across medical, industrial, and marine applications.
The measurement challenge for insulation monitoring is significant: the IMD must accurately measure insulation resistance values in the megohm range while connected to a live power system, without interfering with the normal operation of connected equipment, and in the presence of system capacitance, connected loads with their own leakage currents, and electromagnetic interference. The measurement technique must be robust against these real-world conditions while providing reliable, repeatable measurements.
The principle of operation involves superimposing a small measurement signal on the power system. For DC IT systems, a DC measurement voltage is applied between the system and earth, and the resulting current is measured to calculate the insulation resistance using Ohm’s law. For AC IT systems, a low-frequency AC measurement signal (typically below the power frequency to avoid interference) or a pulsed DC signal is used. The YCIT-J employs an advanced measurement technique that provides accurate insulation resistance measurement even in systems with significant capacitance and connected equipment.
The response of the system to a first fault distinguishes IT systems from grounded systems. In an IT system, when the first insulation fault occurs—a line conductor contacts earth through a fault resistance—the insulation monitor detects the reduced insulation resistance and generates an alarm, but the system continues to operate because there is no fault current path. This “first fault tolerance” is the key advantage of IT systems for applications where continuity of supply is critical. The alarm provides time to locate and repair the fault during scheduled maintenance without interrupting critical operations.
A second insulation fault on a different phase in an IT system creates a phase-to-phase fault through the two earth connections, with fault current determined by the two fault impedances. Overcurrent protection must clear this fault, and the system loses continuity until the faults are repaired. The insulation monitor’s first-fault alarm enables intervention before a second fault can develop, maintaining both safety and continuity.
The Medical IT Isolation Power System integrates the insulation monitor with the isolation transformer, load monitoring, and alarm panel into a complete system. This integration ensures that all components are compatible and that the system as a whole meets the requirements of medical electrical installation standards. The system provides a single point of monitoring and alarm for the medical IT circuit, simplifying operation for clinical staff who are not electrical specialists.
