Vibratory Plate Compactor Soil Dynamics: Compactive Effort, Lift Thickness Optimization, and Granular vs Cohesive Soil Response for Trench and Pavement Compaction

Home » News » Vibratory Plate Compactor Soil Dynamics: Compactive Effort, Lift Thickness Optimization, and Granular vs Cohesive Soil Response for Trench and Pavement Compaction

Vibratory plate compactors achieve soil densification through combined static weight and dynamic vibratory force at 50-90 Hz. The interaction between plate dynamics and soil response determines achievable density at depth.

Dynamic Compaction Force

Dynamic compaction force (centrifugal force) ranges 10-70 kN for walk-behind and excavator-mounted plates. Force transmission through soil depends on frequency relative to soil natural frequency. Granular soils respond at 25-35 Hz; cohesive soils at 15-25 Hz. Higher frequencies compact surface layers; lower frequencies penetrate deeper.

Lift Thickness Optimization

Lift thickness optimization follows the 80% rule: maximum compacted lift equals 80% of the plate’s effective depth of influence. For granular soils, 30 cm loose lifts compact to 25 cm. Cohesive soils require 15 cm maximum lifts.

Equipment

The Vibratory Plate Compactor provides configurable frequency. The Compaction Wheel handles narrow trenches. The Quick Coupler enables rapid attachment changes. The Ripper loosens soil before compaction. The Auger Drive drills pier holes in compacted areas.
