Proper storage and transport of excavator attachments directly affects attachment service life, maintenance requirements, and job site efficiency. Attachments represent significant capital investment—a comprehensive package for a mid-size excavator can exceed the machine’s value—and protecting that investment through appropriate storage and handling practices is sound business management. Storage environment affects attachment deterioration. Outdoor storage exposes attachments to rain, snow, UV radiation, and temperature extremes. Rain and snow cause corrosion of exposed steel surfaces and promote water ingress into hydraulic systems through breathers and worn seals. UV radiation degrades hydraulic hoses, seals, and paint. Temperature cycling causes condensation inside hydraulic components. Indoor storage—in a shed, warehouse, or at minimum under cover—dramatically reduces environmental deterioration. For attachments that must be stored outdoors, consider protective covers (breakers), hydraulic system plugging (all open ports), and corrosion protection (exposed cylinder rods, machined surfaces).

Transport of attachments between job sites requires appropriate transport equipment and tie-down practices. The attachment must be secured independently—not relying on the trailer sides or other cargo to prevent movement. Tie-down straps or chains must be rated for the attachment weight and in good condition, with tension maintained during transport.

Hydraulic system protection during transport prevents contamination. All hydraulic ports—auxiliary hydraulic connections, case drain connections—must be capped or plugged to prevent dirt, water, and debris ingress. The caps or plugs must be clean—installing a dirty cap introduces contamination rather than preventing it. The same caps and plugs should be used during storage. Before connecting the attachment to the excavator, clean the connection area thoroughly to prevent contamination introduction during connection.

Attachment handling equipment—forklifts, overhead cranes, mobile cranes—must be rated for the attachment weight and configured for safe lifting. The attachment’s lifting points—designated by the manufacturer and often marked with a lifting point symbol—must be used. Lifting by non-designated points (hydraulic cylinders, hoses, light brackets) can cause damage and is unsafe. The lifting sling or chain must be inspected before use and rated for the load. During lifting, personnel must remain clear of the suspended load, and the load path must be planned to avoid overflying personnel.
