Excavator Ripper Applications: Single-Shank and Multi-Shank Configurations for Rock Breaking, Frost Penetration, and Pipeline Trenching in Hard Ground

Home » News » Excavator Ripper Applications: Single-Shank and Multi-Shank Configurations for Rock Breaking, Frost Penetration, and Pipeline Trenching in Hard Ground

Excavator rippers convert breakout force into concentrated penetration through single or multiple hardened steel shanks with replaceable teeth. Applications include breaking sedimentary rock (limestone, sandstone), penetrating frost layers, ripping asphalt, and trenching through hardpan where buckets alone cannot penetrate.

Single-Shank Rippers

Single-shank rippers concentrate all hydraulic force through one point—ideal for boulder splitting, trench rock removal, and deep frost penetration. Penetration force of 20-40 tons generates fracture propagation through rock bedding planes.

Multi-Shank Rippers

Multi-shank rippers (2-4 shanks) distribute force for production ripping of weathered rock and compacted soil at higher material volumes per pass. Ripper tooth selection (narrow chisel vs wide spade) matches material hardness. Replaceable tooth caps with tungsten carbide inserts extend service life.

Equipment Integration

The Ripper provides hardened shanks with replaceable teeth. The Hydraulic Breaker handles ripper-resistant hard rock. The Quick Coupler enables fast ripper-to-bucket changes. The Compaction Wheel compacts after ripping. The Auger Drive drills through ripped ground.
