Filter Press Selection Guide: Matching Equipment to Industrial Dewatering Requirements

Home » News » Filter Press Selection Guide: Matching Equipment to Industrial Dewatering Requirements

Proper sizing and selection of filter press equipment is essential for achieving the required throughput, cake quality, and operating economics. Undersized equipment cannot meet production requirements, while oversized equipment represents unnecessary capital expenditure and may operate inefficiently at partial capacity. The sizing process involves systematic evaluation of feed characteristics, throughput requirements, and operating constraints. Qingdao Britop provides application engineering support for equipment selection across its range including the 1200 Series, Membrane, and Ultra High Pressure filter presses.

The sizing process begins with feed material characterization. Laboratory filtration tests using a filter leaf apparatus or small-scale filter press determine the specific filtration resistance and cake compressibility of the material under the intended operating conditions. These tests measure filtration rate (liters per square meter per hour) at various pressures, cake solids content, filtrate quality, and the effect of chemical conditioning. The data forms the basis for scale-up calculations.

The fundamental sizing equation relates filter area (A), cake thickness (L), cycle time (T), and required throughput (Q): the required filter area equals the required cake volume per cycle divided by the cake thickness. Cake volume per cycle equals the solids throughput multiplied by the cycle time divided by the cake bulk density. These relationships, combined with the filtration rate data from laboratory testing, determine the total filter area needed.

The number of plates and plate size is then selected to provide the required filter area. For a given total area, fewer large plates generally provide lower capital cost and simpler operation, while more smaller plates provide flexibility and can be more easily expanded. The 1200 Series with its 1200mm plates provides an efficient area-to-plate ratio for medium to large installations. The number of chambers must also consider the cake thickness—more chambers mean thinner cakes (for the same slurry volume), which are easier to discharge but require more plate handling.

Cycle time is the key operating parameter that determines throughput for a given press size. Cycle time includes filling, filtration, optional membrane squeeze, optional cake wash, air blowing, press opening, cake discharge, cloth washing (if performed every cycle), and press closing. Automation features on machines like the 1600 Rapid Opening Membrane Filter Press minimize non-filtration time, maximizing the productive fraction of each cycle.

Future capacity requirements should be considered in sizing decisions. Installing a press with additional plate capacity—for example, a 100-chamber frame with initially 80 plates installed—provides expansion capability at modest incremental cost. The frame, hydraulic system, and feed pump are sized for the full complement of plates, and additional plates can be installed when demand increases. This approach is more economical than adding a second press or replacing an undersized press.
