Hydraulic breakers convert excavator hydraulic flow into high-frequency impact energy through nitrogen-charged back-head accumulators and reciprocating pistons. Impact energy per blow ranges 200-16,000 Joules, with automatic frequency adjustment from 300-1,200 blows per minute based on rock hardness.
Nitrogen Pre-Charge Optimization
Nitrogen pre-charge pressure is the primary tuning parameter. Under-charging below 14-16 bar reduces impact efficiency as the gas spring fails to return the piston rapidly. Over-charging above 18-20 bar causes piston-to-tool direct contact (dry firing) damaging the tool bushing and piston face. Annual nitrogen check with the Britop maintenance kit maintains optimal pre-charge.
Rock Classification and Breaker Sizing
Rock classification by uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) determines breaker sizing: soft rock (UCS <50 MPa) suits 500-1,000 Joule class; medium (50-100 MPa) requires 1,000-3,000 J; hard (100-200 MPa) needs 3,000-8,000 J. Tool selection—moil point for boulder splitting, chisel for trenching, blunt for oversize breaking—affects energy transfer efficiency.
Equipment
The Hydraulic Breaker provides 200-16,000 J impact. The Quick Coupler enables rapid tool change. The Ripper pre-fractures rock. The Auger Drive drills blast holes. The Compaction Wheel compacts broken material.
