Daily inspection of excavator attachments is the front-line defense against unplanned downtime, premature wear, and safety incidents. A systematic, thorough inspection—performed at the start of each shift and documented—identifies developing problems while they can be addressed through scheduled maintenance rather than emergency repair. This inspection protocol applies to all Qingdao Britop attachments, including the Hydraulic Breaker, Hydraulic Grapple, Hydraulic Compactor, and all others.
The visual inspection is the first and most important step. Walk around the attachment and examine all visible components: structural members (for cracks, distortion, or impact damage), welds (for cracks—look for paint cracking or rust stains that indicate crack initiation), fasteners (for looseness—look for relative movement, rust streaks from the fastener hole, or missing hardware), and hydraulic components (for leakage—look for wet spots, drips, or accumulated dirt at seals and connections). This inspection should be performed with the attachment on the ground (not suspended) for safety and to enable close examination.
Hydraulic system inspection focuses on leak detection and hose condition. Examine all hydraulic hoses for abrasion (outer cover worn through to the reinforcement), cracking (weather checking or age-related hardening), bulging (internal failure of the reinforcement layer), and leakage at the fitting crimp or connection. Check hydraulic cylinders for rod scoring, pitting, or chrome damage; rod seal leakage (oil film on the rod that accumulates into drips); and gland nut tightness. Check the attachment’s hydraulic connections for damage to the quick-connect couplings that could cause connection failure or leakage.
Tool and wear component inspection varies by attachment type. For the hydraulic breaker, inspect the tool bushing area for excessive wear (the gap between tool and bushing), the tool striking end for mushrooming, and the tool working end for wear. For grapples and thumbs, inspect the jaw tips or teeth for wear, the pivot pins for looseness, and the jaw structure for cracks at stress concentration points. For the ripper, inspect the tip for wear and the shank for cracks or bending. For buckets, inspect the cutting edge, teeth/adapters, and side cutters for wear and damage.
The attachment-to-excavator connection is a critical inspection point. For pin-on attachments, verify that all connecting pins are fully seated, retaining hardware is in place and secure, and there is no excessive wear in the pin bores or bushings. For quick coupler connections, verify that the coupler is fully engaged—the locking mechanism is in the locked position with the indicator visible, hydraulic pressure (if applicable) is maintained, and there is no play between the coupler and attachment. Attachment release due to incomplete coupling is a serious safety hazard.
Greasing is a daily requirement for most attachments. Grease all pivot points—bucket pins, thumb pivots, grapple jaw pivots, quick coupler latching points—with the specified grease type and quantity. For hydraulic breakers, grease the tool bushing area with the tool pressed against the ground. Greasing forces out old, contaminated grease and provides fresh lubrication for the day’s work. In particularly dusty or wet conditions, additional greasing during the shift may be necessary.
Document the inspection findings. A simple checklist with pass/fail/comment for each inspection point ensures consistency and provides a record for trend analysis. Photograph any concerning conditions for reference. Report any conditions that require corrective action before the attachment can be safely used. A culture of thorough inspection and prompt reporting of findings is the foundation of equipment reliability.
