Online Double-Conversion UPS Technology: Zero Transfer Time for Critical Loads

UPS Topology Overview

Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) are categorized by their operating topology: offline (standby), line-interactive, and online double-conversion. While offline and line-interactive designs offer cost advantages for non-critical applications, only online double-conversion UPS systems provide the zero transfer time, continuous voltage regulation, and complete isolation from utility power disturbances required by mission-critical loads — data centers, hospital imaging equipment, industrial process controllers, and telecommunications infrastructure.

The YCU series industrial UPS from Sichuan Yachen Electric, distributed through Qingdao Britop, implements true online double-conversion technology in power ratings from 10kVA to 200kVA, providing the highest level of power protection available for demanding applications.

How Double Conversion Works

In an online double-conversion UPS, the incoming AC utility power is first converted to DC by a rectifier stage. This DC power simultaneously charges the battery bank and supplies the inverter stage, which converts the DC back to clean, regulated AC power for the connected load. The critical advantage is that the load is always powered through the inverter, regardless of utility power quality. There is no switching event when utility power fails — the rectifier simply stops supplying DC, and the battery seamlessly assumes the DC bus load.

This “double conversion” — AC to DC, then DC back to AC — completely decouples the load from utility disturbances. Voltage sags, surges, frequency variations, harmonic distortion, and electrical noise on the utility supply never reach the load. The inverter synthesizes a pure sine wave output with voltage regulation typically ±1% and frequency regulation to within ±0.1Hz, far exceeding the tolerance of even the most sensitive electronic equipment.

IGBT Technology

Modern online UPS systems, including the YCU series, utilize insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) technology in both the rectifier and inverter stages. IGBTs combine the high input impedance and fast switching of MOSFETs with the low conduction losses of bipolar transistors, enabling PWM switching frequencies of 15-20kHz. This high-frequency operation reduces transformer size and weight, improves efficiency, and produces an output waveform with low harmonic distortion — typically under 3% THD for linear loads and under 5% for nonlinear loads.

Battery Management

The YCU UPS incorporates intelligent battery management including temperature-compensated charging, automatic battery testing, and predictive battery replacement alerts. The charger uses a three-stage charging profile — bulk, absorption, and float — with temperature compensation that adjusts charging voltage based on battery temperature to maximize service life. Battery runtime can be extended through external battery cabinets for applications requiring extended autonomy.
