Filter Cloth Materials
- Polypropylene (PP): Most widely used. Excellent chemical resistance to acids and alkalis. Operating temperature up to 90°C. Good abrasion resistance and low cost. Default choice for mining, mineral processing, municipal sludge, and general industrial applications.
- Polyester (PET): Higher temperature capability (to 150°C). Better resistance to oxidizing agents. Susceptible to hydrolysis in hot moist alkaline conditions (pH above 9). Used in high-temperature applications and oxidizing environments.
- Nylon (Polyamide): Excellent abrasion resistance. Good alkali resistance but susceptible to acid attack. Moisture absorption causes dimensional change. Used in highly abrasive mineral concentrate dewatering.
- PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride): Excellent resistance to strong acids, oxidizing agents, and halogens. Operating temperature to 150°C. Higher cost. Used in aggressive chemical processing, pharmaceutical, and semiconductor applications.
- PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene): Universal chemical resistance. Operating temperature to 260°C. Excellent cake release (non-stick surface). Highest cost. Used in highly corrosive applications and where superior cake release is essential.
Weave Patterns
- Plain Weave: Tightest weave, smallest pore size, highest particle retention, lowest permeability. Best for fine particle filtration and high filtrate clarity requirements.
- Twill Weave: Diagonal pattern with larger pores, higher permeability, easier cake release. Best for general-purpose filtration.
- Satin Weave: Smooth surface, largest pores, highest permeability, best cake release but poorest retention. Best for coarse particles and applications where cake release is primary concern.
- Reverse Dutch Weave: Very fine warp yarns with heavier weft yarns, extremely fine filtration capability. Best for polishing filtration and very fine particles.
- Monofilament versus Multifilament: Monofilament provides better cake release and easier cleaning. Multifilament provides better particle retention. Most industrial cloths use monofilament for release and cleaning advantages.
Key selection parameters include air permeability (the primary specification for cloth openness), particle retention (micron rating), cake release characteristics, chemical compatibility with all process fluids at operating temperature, and mechanical strength for pressure differential and cleaning forces.
Cloth blinding—progressive filling of cloth pores with fine particles—is addressed through periodic cleaning: high-pressure water spray (50–200 bar), chemical cleaning (acid wash for scale, alkaline wash for organics), or ultrasonic cleaning. Typical cloth life ranges from 500–3,000 cycles for abrasive applications to 5,000–15,000 cycles for non-abrasive applications.
