Transformer Oil Testing and Diagnostics: DGA, Furan Analysis, Interfacial Tension, and Karl Fischer Moisture Measurement for Transformer Condition Assessment

Home » News » Transformer Oil Testing and Diagnostics: DGA, Furan Analysis, Interfacial Tension, and Karl Fischer Moisture Measurement for Transformer Condition Assessment

Transformer insulating oil serves dual functions as electrical insulator and thermal coolant. Oil condition directly reflects the health of the transformer it serves. Dissolved gas analysis detects incipient faults months before they become critical. Furfural analysis measures paper insulation ageing. Interfacial tension tracks oxidation. Karl Fischer titration measures moisture content to ppm precision.

Dissolved Gas Analysis

DGA identifies fault gases: hydrogen from partial discharge, acetylene from arcing, ethylene from thermal faults, methane and ethane from low-energy discharge. Ratios like Rogers and Duval Triangle classify fault type and severity.

Paper Insulation Assessment

Furfural (2-FAL) concentration in oil correlates with degree of polymerization (DP) of paper insulation. DP below 200 indicates end-of-life. Interfacial tension below 22 dynes/cm indicates excessive oxidation.

Diagnostic Solutions

The Oil Testing Service provides complete diagnostic packages. The Double Stage Purifier removes moisture and gases. The Oil Regeneration System restores aged oil. The Surge Arrester Monitor monitors associated equipment. The Smart Grid Platform integrates diagnostic data.
