Structural demolition of steel-frame buildings, reinforced concrete bridges, and industrial facilities places extreme demands on excavator attachments. An excavator demolition shear must cut through I-beams, rebar cages, steel decking, and pipe while withstanding side-loading forces, abrasive concrete contact, and the jarring impact of structural members snapping under load. Demolition shear design balances cutting force at the jaw tip, jaw opening width, rotation capability, and overall weight.

Hydraulic Cutting Force Mechanics

Hydraulic cylinder force is amplified through the shear mechanical linkage. Single-pivot shears provide a 3:1 to 5:1 mechanical advantage while twin-pivot designs offer variable advantage with high force at the jaw throat for heavy sections. Jaw Geometry and Material Processing

Shear jaw geometry determines material processing strategy. Piercing tip shears concentrate force at the tip for puncturing and sectioning large beams. Combination demolition shears integrate a concrete pulverizer jaw in addition to a steel cutting jaw, enabling operators to process mixed-material structures without changing attachments.

The ability to rotate the shear 360 degrees allows optimal cutting angle regardless of the excavator position relative to the structure. This rotational freedom is critical when working in confined demolition sites where machine repositioning is limited.

Steel Processing Capacity

Demolition shears are rated by their maximum cutting force and jaw opening. Heavy-duty shears for bridge demolition must handle structural steel members up to 24 inches deep, while building demolition shears typically process beams ranging from 12 to 18 inches. The cutting force at the jaw tip ranges from 200 to over 1,000 tons depending on shear size and excavator carrier weight class.

Complementary Demolition Attachments
