Ring Main Unit Cable Online Monitoring: Partial Discharge Detection, Temperature Sensing, and Fault Location for Urban Distribution Network Reliability

Home » News » Ring Main Unit Cable Online Monitoring: Partial Discharge Detection, Temperature Sensing, and Fault Location for Urban Distribution Network Reliability

Ring main units form critical nodes in urban distribution networks. Cable faults within RMU-connected circuits cause extended outages. Online monitoring integrates partial discharge sensors, sheath current transformers, and distributed temperature sensing for comprehensive RMU cable condition assessment.

Partial Discharge Detection

Partial discharge detection uses HFCT sensors on cable earth straps with sensitivity below 10 pC. TEV sensors on RMU enclosures detect internal PD activity. Phase-resolved PD patterns distinguish internal cable PD from RMU switchgear discharges.

Distributed Temperature Sensing

Distributed temperature sensing via fiber optic cables in cable trenches provides continuous thermal profiles with 1°C accuracy and 1-meter spatial resolution. Hot spot detection identifies cable joint degradation, overloaded sections, and thermal resistivity changes in surrounding soil.

Equipment

The RMU Cable Monitor provides integrated PD and temperature monitoring. The Cable Current Monitor detects sheath faults. The Smart Grid Platform aggregates data. The Overhead Line Monitor monitors feeder lines. The Surge Arrester Monitor protects RMU equipment.
