Temperature rise monitoring in low voltage switchgear is a fundamental aspect of electrical safety and equipment reliability management. Excessive temperature at connection points, busbar joints, and circuit breaker terminals indicates deteriorating contact conditions that, if left unaddressed, can progress to thermal runaway, insulation failure, and potentially catastrophic arc flash incidents.
Infrared thermography remains the most widely used method for temperature monitoring in LV switchgear, offering non-contact measurement that is safe for energized equipment. Modern thermal imaging cameras with sensitivity better than 0.05C can detect temperature anomalies as small as 1C above ambient, enabling identification of loose connections, overloaded circuits, and phase imbalances. However, traditional periodic thermographic inspection has significant limitations: it captures only a single point in time and requires panel doors to be opened, which changes the thermal conditions being measured.
Continuous temperature monitoring systems address these limitations through permanently installed sensors. Wireless surface acoustic wave temperature sensors, fiber optic temperature probes, and infrared point sensors can be installed at critical connection points without compromising insulation coordination. These sensors transmit real-time temperature data to monitoring platforms that calculate temperature rise above ambient, eliminating the influence of varying load conditions and ambient temperatures on measurement interpretation.
Advanced monitoring systems incorporate load current measurement to calculate the temperature rise per unit current, a parameter that directly reflects contact resistance. Trending this ratio over time provides early warning of deteriorating connections before absolute temperature limits are exceeded. Integration with building management systems and SCADA platforms enables automated alarm escalation and coordinated response procedures, significantly reducing the risk of LV switchgear fires in commercial buildings and industrial facilities.
